Pieter Levels runs a multi-million dollar company that is just one Dutch guy with a laptop

There is a specific kind of founder who talks about their stack the way other people talk about their skincare routine: Kubernetes, microservices, a data lake, a platform team. Pieter Levels is the opposite of that person. He runs everything, and we mean everything, on one server, in PHP, with jQuery, and he posts the uptime graph when people make fun of him for it. The joke stopped being a joke around the time the revenue passed most funded startups.

Levels is the closest thing indie hacking has to a founding myth. In 2014 he was a Dutch guy with a backpack and a blog, and he announced he would launch 12 startups in 12 months, in public, with revenue numbers attached. Most of the twelve died. That was the point. Two of the survivors, Nomad List and Remote OK, basically invented the digital nomad internet, and he has been compounding ever since.

Ship it ugly, ship it today

The Levels method is aggressively simple. Build the smallest thing that could possibly work, launch it the same week, charge money immediately, and let the market do your product reviews. No waitlist theater, no stealth mode, no brand identity workshop. Nomad List started as a Google spreadsheet he tweeted. People kept adding cities. That spreadsheet became the paid community that thousands of remote workers use to decide where to live.

When AI image models showed up, he did not write a think piece. He shipped Interior AI, then PhotoAI, which turns a handful of selfies into professional photoshoots and quietly became one of the biggest solo AI products on the internet. Then, because none of this is serious enough, he vibe-coded a multiplayer flight simulator live on X and had strangers flying around a blocky sky together within days, selling ads on blimps while actual game studios were still writing design docs.

Every number is public. Revenue, churn, server bills, failures. His open dashboards have done more to teach people how internet businesses actually work than most MBA programs, and we are only half kidding.

The one-man empire, annotated

You could dismiss the whole thing as luck, and plenty of people have, usually from inside companies with forty engineers and no profit. But twelve years of shipping is not luck. It is a worldview: stay small, own everything, automate what bores you, and never hire anyone whose job is to schedule meetings about meetings.

His book MAKE says it plainly: you do not need permission, funding, or a technical co-founder from Stanford. You need to build something people want and put a price on it. Thousands of indie hackers, including several people on this site, are running some version of the Levels playbook right now.

Is he occasionally too online? Absolutely. Is the PHP thing a bit? Partially. Should you study every move he makes in public? Yes, and you can start this afternoon, because it is all right there.
