Jason Zook made a million dollars wearing other people's t-shirts, then learned the hard way what enough feels like
Jason Zook
Professional weirdo, calm-business evangelist
Some internet origin stories involve a dorm room and a hoodie. Jason Zook's involves a closet, a Flip camera, and the sudden realization that companies give away free t-shirts because people look at them. On January 1, 2009, then-Jason Sadler put on a branded shirt that cost a sponsor one dollar, filmed himself, and uploaded the evidence. Day two cost two dollars. December 31 cost three hundred sixty-five. The idea should have been a one-year joke. It became a five-year company.
IWearYourShirt put him on The Today Show before influencer was a job title anyone said out loud without laughing. Starbucks, Nissan, Zappos, Shopify, Kodak, Pepperidge Farm launching a cracker, more than sixteen hundred brands paid him to be a walking billboard who also made content. Revenue climbed toward half a million a year. The business looked like a cartoon of internet success. Internally, it was becoming a cartoon of something else.
The name game and the crash
When his mom divorced and the Sadler name stopped feeling necessary, Jason did the normal thing and auctioned the rights to his last name. Headsets.com won. A year later he auctioned it again and became Jason SurfrApp long enough to put it on a book cover. Nearly a hundred thousand dollars for living as a human domain name. Eventually he chose Zook, after his great-grandfather, which is the least weird detail in this paragraph and somehow the most romantic.
The crash is the part most highlight reels skip. By the time he retired from shirt-wearing in 2013, the company had cleared a million in revenue and he was over a hundred thousand in debt, burned out, and asking a friend to cover a nine-dollar burrito. That lunch became a book idea: sell every page of a not-yet-written memoir as sponsorship inventory. Creativity For Sale existed as a Shopify product before it existed as sentences. It worked. So did the long, unglamorous rebuild with Caroline, debt paid in under three years, then a string of calmer experiments: Teachery, BuyMyFuture, Wandering Aimfully.
The through-line is not stunts for stunts' sake. It is treating attention as a material you can shape, then learning, publicly, awkwardly, that revenue is not the same thing as a life.
A quieter second act in Portugal
He is quieter now, on purpose. He writes from a Portuguese beach town where he occasionally bumps into the mayor at dinner. He bakes weekly sourdough, obsesses over V60 pour-overs, and has not woken up to an alarm in fifteen years if he can help it. The man who once legally answered to HeadsetsDotCom at airport security now talks about enough like it is a spiritual practice with a P&L.
Caroline is not a cameo. She is the co-founder energy in half the later chapters, design brain, strategy ballast, partner in Wandering Aimfully and the new vibe-coding chapter. Together they shut down a coaching business that was minting money because they were bored of it, which is either insane or the most Jason sentence possible.
If you need a growth hack, look elsewhere. If you need proof that a weird idea, run with total sincerity, can buy you a quieter second act, he is the case study that still wears well.
If you're chasing after other people's dreams and not the ones you define for yourself, you'll never be happy and you'll never stop chasing.
