Abhishek Chakravarty spent a decade shipping other people's products, then built the form tool that made Typeform sweat

There are two kinds of engineers who go indie. The first kind builds a beautiful product, tells no one, and writes a postmortem eight months later titled something like 'What I Learned.' The second kind treats shipping as a skill you rep like a muscle: build, launch, learn, sell, repeat. Abhishek Chakravarty is aggressively the second kind, and he put in those reps for years before anything went viral.

The resume is the point. CS degree, startup jobs, a long stretch of freelancing, then his own products: Botflow, a chatbot builder he built and sold, and a handful of other launches that taught him what people pay for and what they politely bookmark. By the time Youform came along, he was not guessing. He was executing.

Finding the wedge in a crowded market

Form builders in 2024 were not exactly an open frontier. Typeform owned the category, and a dozen clones fought over the scraps. But Typeform had developed the one weakness that bootstrappers dream about: pricing that made its own users flinch. Run a form with a few hundred responses and watch the bill grow a personality.

So Abhishek and his co-founder Davis Baer, a marketer he teamed up with across a ten-and-a-half-hour timezone gap, built Youform around a single unreasonable promise: unlimited forms, unlimited responses, free. The paid tier sells polish and power features, not ransom for your own data. Ten thousand users showed up in the first seven months, eighteen thousand by year's end, and the company stayed unfunded the whole way, which means every one of those users is a customer, not a metric in a pitch deck.

The product itself is the quiet flex. Conversational forms like Typeform's, minus the bloat, shipped by what is essentially one engineer in Bengaluru moving faster than a funded team. Every 'how is this free?' tweet is marketing he never had to buy.

The long apprenticeship pays off
