madamestarlet has put out ten records in four years with no label behind her, and she has done every single job on every one of them
madamestarlet
Writes it, sings it, produces it, films it and edits it, out of a bedroom in Chicago
Ten releases in four years is a healthy rate for a band with a label, a producer and somebody whose whole job is the artwork.
madamestarlet has done it from a bedroom in Chicago, on a laptop, a MIDI keyboard and a microphone, and she has done every job on every one of them.
Every job, and she means it literally
"I literally can do and will do everything for myself if I have to. I can produce, film, direct, edit all of my work."
The hard part of making records alone was never the song. Anybody with a laptop can finish a song. The wall is the second week, when the thing needs a cover, a video, a press shot and a room to play it in, and there is nobody standing there to hand it to. That is where most bedroom projects quietly become a folder of unreleased demos.
She directs the videos. Weakness of Life came out in July 2025 written, sung and produced by her, with a video she directed herself and co-directed with Suimo, and she calls it her proudest work so far. She has kept a live band together for three years, with Laney, Bobby and KJ, which is its own separate discipline and one that the laptop cannot help with.
Trip-hop, electroclash, and whatever is next
The influences she names are Madonna, FKA Twigs, Massive Attack, Janet Jackson and The Prodigy, which is less a list than a map of the space she moves around in: pop instincts, industrial weight, a taste for a cold synth and a very warm vocal.
You can hear her move across it. Viva La Madame! in 2023, then the 2024 EP with the title that is the entire aesthetic in one line, COMPUTERIZED... DATABASED... TECHNOTRONIC.. MUSIC, BABY. Then a run through this year that has not let up: LoveTakeover, baseball bat in June, UNDER YOUR SKIN, Somerhalder in August. Her own summary of why is short: "I've always been the type to gravitate towards going outside the box and experiment with things that I feel are interesting."
Ten records deep and the output rate is still climbing. Start with baseball bat and work backwards.
I literally can do and will do everything for myself if I have to. I can produce, film, direct, edit all of my work.
